Installing a pool fence is an important safety measure that can help prevent accidents and ensure compliance with local safety regulations. Here are some things to consider when installing a pool fence:

  1. 1. Local safety regulations: Check the City of Milton's pool enclosure bylaw to ensure that your pool fence meets all the requirements. For example, the fence must be a certain height and have self-closing and self-latching gates.  If you're working with a professional pool fence installer, they should know this particular bylaw.
  2. Material: Choose a durable and low-maintenance material that is suitable for your pool area's environment. Materials such as aluminum, glass, mesh, and vinyl are popular choices for pool fences.  Keep in mind the City of Milton requires them to be vertical boards, picket style or panel construction.
  3. Height: Make sure that the fence is high enough to prevent children and pets from climbing over it. The City of Milton requires a minimum height of four feet in most cases.
  4. Gate: Install a self-closing and self-latching gate that is out of reach of children. Ensure that the gate locks automatically and is not easily tampered with.
  5. Visibility: Choose a fence that provides adequate visibility so that you can monitor the pool area easily. For example, a metal rail fence provides excellent visibility, while a solid fence may obstruct your view.
  6. Maintenance: Choose a fence material that is low maintenance and easy to clean. For example, vinyl and aluminum fences require minimal maintenance, while glass fences may require more frequent cleaning.
  7. Aesthetics: Choose a fence that complements your pool area's aesthetics and landscaping. Fences come in a range of colors and styles, so you can choose one that enhances the look of your backyard.

Example

At Milton Fence, we recently helped a local homeowner who was rushing to complete their backyard pool project ahead of summer without realizing the strict fencing requirements in Milton. They had already scheduled pool installation and were just days away from completion when they learned that Milton’s bylaw requires a minimum 1.5-metre (5-foot) tall fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate surrounding any pool—and that the fence must be in place before the pool can be filled with water. The homeowner also hadn’t applied for the required pool enclosure permit, which carries a fee of $170 (as per Town of Milton's 2024 fee schedule). Without the proper fencing, they risked a $500 fine per day and a significant delay in their project.

Our team quickly assessed the site and recommended a pressure-treated wood fence solution that met the legal height requirement, incorporated the necessary locking gate mechanisms, and matched the style of the homeowner’s existing landscape. We fast-tracked the design and installation process, completing it within three days—just in time to stay on track with the pool contractor's schedule. We also assisted the homeowner in submitting the correct permit paperwork to the Town. As a result, the homeowner avoided costly penalties and project delays, while gaining peace of mind knowing their new pool is safe, secure, and fully bylaw-compliant.
